The Jacx came up with an ace.
Tishman Speyer’s 1.2-million-square-foot office and retail tower in much-in-the-news Long Island City has inked Manhattan’s star Loring Place chef Dan Kluger to open a 5,000- square-foot restaurant facing Jackson Avenue — where three Tishman-developed projects comprising five towers stand side-by-side.
The target opening is spring 2020. “It isn’t a large deal in square footage, but it’s a big deal symbolically,” Tishman Speyer Chief Executive and President Rob Speyer said Monday.
“It will serve more than 10,000 people who are part of our community,” Speyer said — referring to those who live or work at the Jacx, Tishman Speyer’s new rental apartment tower Jackson Park and at Two Gotham Center, an office project that Tishman developed but later sold.
Kluger’s arrival comes at a historic turning point for the area. Until news broke of Amazon’s plan to set up a “campus” for 25,000 employees, Long Island City — despite an explosion of apartment skyscrapers on the East River waterfront and a medium-cool image — was forever the city’s “next great neighborhood.” Now it’s the belle of the five-borough ball.
Speyer views his company’s projects as a harbinger of Amazon’s decision. Tishman Speyer first rolled the LIC development dice in 2003 with an option to buy land.
“I think the transformation was well underway long before the Amazon search process kicked off,” Speyer said.
